Story

The origin

Casa do Canto dates back to the 17th century (1680), but its more recent history dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, a time when António Rodrigues and later his sons António and Manuel Joaquim increased the heritage of vineyards in Bairrada to such an extent, that in an engraved stone in the cellar is the production of wine in 1856, which was 4,678 almudes and became the largest cellar in the region.

Buidings

From the first construction dating back to the 17th century, all that remains are the Chapel of the House, consecrated in 1860 to the Holy Name of Jesus, the sacristy, the coach house (now a place for fermentation and ageing of natural sparkling wines), the interior courtyard where the vinegars evolve, some other rural buildings and the former owners' house, rebuilt in 1903.

The vineyards

In the 40 hectares of vineyards of Casa do Canto, located near the winery, the red varieties Baga predominate, followed by Touriga Nacional with some Syrah and Merlot and the white varieties Arinto, Bical and Maria Gomes with some Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Although the trend is to diversify the varieties according to some tastes in the market which appreciates easier-to-drink wines Baga is still the preferred variety. The grapes are harvested at the right ripeness and in the winery the musts are slowly fermented in traditional open-topped wine presses and closed stainless steel tanks, with the wines stored in glazed cement, stainless steel and wooden containers.
